An online Shakespeare game based on the story of Romeo and Juliet has suddenly taken the internet by storm and has, surprisingly, received over 22 million visitors to its website since the game’s official launch.
This online game allows web users to take on the character of one of Shakespeare’s most popular figures, Romeo, as he collects flowers for his young love Juliet.
As he travels through the streets of Stratford-upon-Avon, he tries to avoid a number of wild boars and skeletons.
The objective of the game is to gather as many roses for your sweetheart Juliet, which is a fitting game to play during this St. Valentine’s Day season.
The Bard of Avon, himself, also makes an unexpected appearance in the game as he tells Romeo how to progress on to the next level, or scene.
This internet game was created as a means to promote Shakespeare County tourism. The game became a surprise hit among UK’s population earlier last May, but has now gained recognition around the world.
Phil Hackett, Chief Executive of Shakespeare Country, stated,”I wanted to do a viral campaign but only estimated about 2.5 million would play it.”
He also goes on to share how the programmers of the game have done an excellent job to make the environment and landmarks recognizable and you also get a chance to pass William Shakespeare’s birthplace, Anne Hathaway’s cottage, and the theater.
This Shakespeare game has become so fun to play by online users that many of the players have recommended the game to family & friends through various tweets on Twitter, Facebook posts, and etc.
Other Shakespeare organizations also welcomed the game as a great means to market and promote interest in the county again.
The Shakespeare Country is a not for profit partnership between Stratford and Warwick district councils and the private sector.
