Over the past weekend, many attendees lent their ears to hear the reciting of Shakespeare monologues and sonnets done by high school students in the Central Pennsylvania Shakespeare Competition. This event was done last Saturday at the State Theatre’s Stage where many teenagers expressed their love for the famous works of playwright and poet William Shakespeare.
This competition, which is in its 13th year of organizing, was a collaboration of students from neighboring High schools competing for a spot to represent there region for the National Shakespeare Competition in New York City in late April. This year’s event consisted of six students performing a memorized monologue in front of a panel of three judges.
This year’s winner was Corinna Munn, a senior at State College Area High School.
“I’m in shock — really happy,” Munn said. “All my practicing really paid off.”
In addition to winning the competition, Munn also joined other fellow thespian students onstage in a short reenactment of Shaking Up Shakespeare, which is a show created by Anthony Glen for the purpose of demystifying the famous Bard of Avon and making his literary works easier to understand. While they were doing this, it gave the judges time to determine who this year’s winner was going to be.
Each of the contestants received a deck of William Shakespeare quotation cards, a T-shirt, and a certificate of achievement.
