Most die-hard Shakespeare fans have already heard about the soon to be released movie Tempest, which is a film adaptation of the popular Shakespeare play directed by Julie Taymor. Anyone who has read this story knows that it is an interesting mix of romance, comedy, tragedy, and the supernatural, which is not uncommon for most of William Shakespeare’s Works. Sadly, this upcoming movie has received a fair share of bad reviews from expert film critics & viewers. Unfortunately, there were disappointments about the huge adjustments that the film had made in both gender and race identities for the characters.
Julie’s film adaptation of Tempest introduces an interesting component to the 400 year Shakespeare story by swapping the gender of a major character within the movie. Instead of having a male sorcerer named Prospero, who unleashes his magic against wayfaring visitors, the film creates a female form as Prospera. The role of Prospera was played by actress Helen Mirren and this unique portrayal of a female sorceress adds a unique flavor to the entire story and gives her journey from vengeance to forgiveness a whole new quality.
